Introduction:

The goal of this course is to introduce students to a wide range of basic biological concepts. As new topics and concepts are introduced, students will be asked to form and develop their own thoughts and ideas in relationship to previously learned content. It is mandatory that students keep up with homework, lab reports, quizzes and tests in order to be successful. Students are responsible for coming to see me if they are absent and need makeup work. It is my goal to provide students with a well-rounded biological background and develop interest in the biological sciences.

Expectations:
1. Students are expected to perform to the best of their abilities.
2. Students are expected to come to class on time, ready to work.
3. Students are to complete all assignments in a timely manner.
4. Students are always encouraged to seek help and ask questions when needed.
5. Students are expected to come to class prepared, with their book, notebook and a pen.

Topics to be covered:

Semester 1 Semester 2
1. The Science of Biology 8. DNA & RNA
3. Cell Structure and Function 10. Natural Selection
2. The Chemistry of Life 11. Mechanisms of Evolution
4. Energy and the Cell 12. Origins of Biodiversity
5. Cell Division 13. Energy and Nutrients

MIDTERM FINAL

Grading:
Grades are determined using a total point system, meaning that every assignment will be counted in some way into the calculation of grades. Usually students can expect most of their grade to come from lab assignments tests, quizzes and homework assignments. I post all averages around the first of each month, so students are aware of their quarterly average every few weeks and are responsible for making up missed work. Point breakdowns are assigned as follows.

Weight of assignments in grade calculation:

Labs and Activities: points vary depending on the assignment
Lab activities will be completed in class. Students should make plans to make up missed work.

Tests: 200 points each
Tests will be given at the conclusion of each chapter.

Quizzes: 100 points each
Quizzes will be given as needed during the course of a chapter.

Homework: 10 points each
Homework, worksheets and notes will be given, students are expected to complete all work.

Lab Practical: points vary
In some cases students will be assessed based on lab performance.

Research Paper: Topics in Science 400 points
Equal to two test grades! Every student will be expected to complete a PowerPoint project to be presented to the class. Topics may vary. Students will be given class time to complete the project with assistance and use of the computer lab.
Helpful Suggestions:
It is important for students to be organized and keep up with their work. If absent you must be sure to get your makeup work as soon as possible. According to school policy, students have as many days they are out to complete missed work. Students should attend class with a notebook, writing instrument and their book.
